Scholarships will reduce ignorance, relapse and stagnancy in the society – Economist

An economist, Mr Rasaki Oladejo, has said the award of scholarships to brilliant students will help get rid of ignorance and stagnancy in the society.

Oladejo who is the President of Oluyole Club, Lagos,  said this while giving scholarships to 10 students from various higher institutions in Nigeria.

The 10 students who all hailed from Ibadan in Oyo State were given N75, 000 each.

He said, ‘‘the best way to develop any nation is through education, many of us were not born with a silver spoon and I used scholarship all through my life. Without scholarship, I do not know where I will be. If you want to get rid of ignorance, it is through education.’’

Oladejo explained that the club used to give scholarships to post graduate students but now decided to extend it to undergraduate students.

A Professor of medicine, College of Medicine, University of Lagos, Bashir Akande,   who gave the Oluyole Club annual lecture called for more awareness on the cancer of the large bowel.

The lectured was titled, ‘The scourge of large bowel and rectal cancer: Need for greater awareness among the populace.’

Akande explained that the cancer of the large bowel was the commonest cancer of the digestive system all over the world.

‘‘The need for more awareness of colorectal cancer among the populace and attending physicians cannot be overemphasised. What must not be forgotten is the scarcity of personnel, technology and medical centres where an adequate and prompt diagnosis of bowel cancer can be made. ’’

One of the awardees who is a  200 level  student of the University of Lagos, Mass Communication, Moyosoreoluw Azeez and on a 5.0 CGPA explained that she was elated at the gesture and promised to use the fund judiciously.

Others are, Adebunmi Owolabi of Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, Omotola Fasasi of Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, Hafiz Olayiwola of University of Ibadan, Grace Suara of University of Lagos, Olaronke Babalola of University of Lagos, Ogo-Oluwa Oguntola of Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, Victor Olalekan of University of Ibadan, Samuel Olubode of Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, and  Olanrewaju Abioye of University of Ibadan.
