Outcome-Based Learning: Council for Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN) teams on accreditation exercise visit to Covenant University.

A team of accreditors from the Council for Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN) on a certification visit to Covenant University’s engineering programmes as it pertains to adherence to the Outcome Based Education (OBE) learning model have appealed to the management of Covenant University to continually support the College of Engineering of the University to maintain a global standard.

The team lead for accreditation to one of the engineering programmes, Professor Mark N. Nwohu of the Federal University of Technology, Minna, said COREN has been saddled with the responsibility of regulating the teaching, training, and practice of engineering in Nigeria.

Professor Nwohu said the teams were in Covenant to see how the engineering programmes of the University have embraced and conformed with teaching and training best practices, especially as it relates to OBE requirements.

He said the goal of the exercise was to ensure that graduates of engineering are on sound footing and meet industry expectations. "When your university is rated number one in Nigeria, Africa, and among the topmost in the world, it will be a thing of joy for us as Nigerians because it will not just be Covenant but Nigeria that will be on the global map. So, we are taking this exercise as a serious venture to reposition the programme for global relevance," he added.

While assuring the University’s management of a thorough assessment process, Professor Nwohu appreciated the logistical support and warm reception they have received since their arrival.

Responding, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Abiodun H. Adebayo, appreciated the team for undertaking this national assignment at such a crucial time to improve the practice of engineering in the nation.

Professor Adebayo commended the leadership of COREN for making Nigeria one of the first signatories to the Washington Accord, as it will open greater global opportunities for indigenous practitioners in the field of engineering.

He assured the teams of the University’s unfettered access to scrutinise her processes as they pertain to these programmes, noting that Covenant University was open to corrections that would help her attain greater heights amongst the league of world-class institutions.

The accreditation teams will carry out an OBE-based review of the curriculum of the Petroleum, Electrical and Information, Chemical, civil, and mechanical engineering programmes of the University.
