The Vice Chancellor of the Federal University of Technology Akure, FUTA Professor Adenike Oladiji, has commended students who attended a capacity training workshop on 'upcycling' for their efforts in recycling the school's waste and transforming them to beautification items. The workshop was held at the FUTA Wildlife Park on Saturday 26th, August 2023.
The Vice Chancellor who was represented by the Deputy Vice Chancellor, Development Professor Sunday Oluyamo expressed delight with the content of the workshop stating that their innovations which are handcrafted from public waste items uphold the motto of the university which is Technology for self-reliance.
She encouraged the students to keep sharpening their skills. She said "whatever one learns with their hands can never go to waste no matter how small or little it is, it could even be part of their success story in life".
She commended Dr Oladeji Sunday Oladipo and Dr. Mrs. Sadiat Funmilayo Arifalo for facilitating and organizing the Workshop and assisting the University in bringing out the handcrafting skills of the students and urged them to keep training students on upcycling.
Dr Oladeji said the workshop involves turning waste items to beautification designs and equipment and to enable students to acquire the knowledge of crafting so as to enable them become self-reliant.
He said that since inception, the students have handcrafted things like tote bag out of old ankara and rice sack, flower decoration out of polytene nylon, flower vases out of water bottles, phone holder out of cartoons amongst others.
