The College of Medicine, University of Lagos (CMUL) Class of ‘77/’82 has completed the renovation and refurbishment of the CMUL Main Auditorium, Tafawa Balewa Plaza, Idi-Araba.
As part of activities marking its 40th anniversary in 2022, the class had approached the Provost, College of Medicine, Prof. David Oke, with a burning desire to give back to the College. It had promised to “do something good, unique and donate to the College on or before the end of June 2023”. This promise was fulfilled by June 30, 2023 through a letter to the Provost signifying the completion of work on its chosen project, which had lasted for 5 months.
The renovated auditorium was officially commissioned by the former President of the UNILAG Alumni Association worldwide and co-founder of Eko Hospital, Olor’ogun (Dr) Sonny Kuku on Wednesday, July 26, 2023.
The commissioning ceremony featured goodwill messages from Olor’ogun (Dr.) Sonny Kuku, Consultant Physician/Endocrinologist (rtd), Dr. Catherine Agboola-Abu, and COMPSSA President, Ridwan Ajibade. The event also presented a platform for the sashing of the ‘77/82 set by the Chairman, CMUL Alumni Association Caretaker Committee, Professor Ademola Oremosu and Dr. U.A.C Okafor.
In attendance at the ceremony were members of the CMUL Management team; immediate past Provost, CMUL, Prof. Afolabi Lesi; several alumni from the graduating class including the Director, Premier Specialist Medical Centre, Dr. Abiodun Eke-Aluko; Consultant Physician/Endocrinologist, Dr. Catherine Agboola-Abu; Orthodontist, Dr. Babatunde Ogunbanjo; staff and some students of the College.
In his remarks at the commissioning ceremony, the Provost, College of Medicine, Prof. David Oke, expressed the College’s appreciation to the ‘77/82 set for the kind gesture shown by its giving back to its alma-mater. He seized the moment to appreciate the graduating class of ’89 which had initially renovated the auditorium in August, 2014.
For the Chairman of the Alumni set, Prof. Mobolaji A. Oludara, the Main Auditorium holds a lot of fond memories for the set, as his set was received and welcomed into the College of Medicine at the auditorium over 46 years ago by the then Provost, late Prof. Emmanuel Adeyemo Elebute. They also received lectures in Anatomy, Physiology and Biochemistry at the Auditorium.
According to Prof. Oludara, the newly renovated auditorium will serve as a befitting edifice for academic activities by staff and students and as a reference point spurring other notable sets/alumni to embark on greater projects in the College of Medicine.
It will be recalled that the class of ‘77/82 had, in 2019, donated a dental chair and all its appendages to the College.
