UNILAG commissions Data Management Office,  set up by the African Centre of Excellence for Drug Research, Herbal Medicine Development and Regulatory Science (ACEDHARS).

Thursday, September 14, 2023 marked the beginning of the journey towards better data management at the University of Lagos with the commissioning of the Data Management Office (DMO).

Located at the Academic Planning Unit of the university, the Data Management Office was set up by the African Centre of Excellence for Drug Research, Herbal Medicine Development and Regulatory Science (ACEDHARS) in collaboration with Prime Touch Technologies with the aim of improving data management at the institution.

The Director, ACEDHARS, Dr. Omobolanle Ade-Ademilua, in her address, stated that the DMO was birthed out of the need for proper data management in the University. The Centre decided to set up the office at the Academic Planning Unit because it thought it appropriate to be located there.

She disclosed that ACEDHARDS furnished the office with the required equipment, software and staff, and also drew up a data management policy as well as a career structure for staff of the office. She noted that 15 members of staff of the University were trained extensively on data management and the best three (3) were selected to run the DMO, under the supervision of the math guru and Deputy Director, Academic Planning Unit, Dr. Akinfenwa, inducted into the software and migrated to the new data management career path.

The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Folasade Ogunsola, OON, FAS, applauded Dr. Ade-Ademilua and ACEDHARS for commitment to carrying out the project to term and checking so many boxes in terms of automation of processes in the university, creation of avenues for better planning, human capital development, innovation, interface with the private sector, among others.

She enjoined the office to work closely with the Centre for Information Technology and Systems (CITS), Human Resources Management Directorate (HRMD) and other key offices in order to get required data in the University. Prof. Ogunsola also congratulated all who worked tenaciously to make the project a success – the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Development Services), Prof. Ayodele Atsenuwa, Prof. Adams, Prof. Olusoji Ilori, and the new staff of the office. She applauded the implementation of one of her core visions which is professionalisation of administration.

The event was rounded off with a short demonstration of the workings of the installed software at the DMO.
