The Department of Microbiology, Faculty of Science, University of Lagos, on Friday, June 23, 2023, rolled out the drums to celebrate 3 (three) Professors of the department as they bowed out of active service.

The Department of Microbiology, Faculty of Science, University of Lagos, on Friday, June 23, 2023, rolled out the drums to celebrate 3 (three) Professors of the department as they bowed out of active service.

All roads led to the Faculty of Science Boardroom where colleagues, friends, associates, mentees, admirers and well-wishers converged to honor and celebrate Distinguished Professor Olukayode Amund, FAS along with Professors Olusimbo Aboaba and Adeyemi Adeleye for their services, leadership and impacts all through their years of service.

In separate remarks, the Head of Department of Microbiology, Professor Roseline Uzeh and Dean, Faculty of Science, Professor Elijah Oyeyemi congratulated the three eggheads for their contributions to the growth, developments and milestones recorded in the department throughout their years of service.

Professors Uzor and Oyeyemi showered encomiums on the three senior faculty members, describing them as icons who have led with purpose, mentored many and made notable contributions to the body of knowledge especially in their respective fields.

There were goodwill messages from several faculty members including immediate past Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academics and Research), Prof. Oluwole Familoni alongside mentees of the retiring professors, took turns to appreciate the retiring senior members for their leadership, contributions and impact especially in the field of Microbiology in Nigeria.

In response to all the comments and encomiums, Distinguished Professor Olukayode Amund, FAS, Professors Olusimbo Aboaba and Adeyemi Adeleye were full of gratitude to the rank and file of the Department of Microbiology for the love, support and honour bestowed on them.

The trio recalled fond memories of their growth in the University of Lagos, appreciated successive managements for the conducive ambiance and charged the faculty members to keep the flag of scholarly and administrative excellence flying.

In his remarks, Chairman of the occasion, Distinguished Professor Dele Olowokudejo congratulated the 3 retiring academics for a successful service to the University and to the academic community, especially in their respective areas of research.

Distinguished Professor Olowokudejo recalled his relationship with the retiring professors, one which he said dates back to their days as UNILAG undergraduates. He saluted them for being resilient, committed, dogged, resourceful and tenacious; virtues which he said stood them out among their peers globally.

He wished them a happy retirement, and prayed for good health for them to reap the fruits of their labor.

 Other highlights of the event which was also attended by the current Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academics and Research), Professor Bola Oboh, were the presentation of gifts, prayers, cutting of cake and raising of a toast as a token of love to the honourees.

Distinguished Professor Olukayode Amund, FAS was born in May 1953. He came into UNILAG as an undergraduate in 1974, launched the record of first class in Biology and thereafter proceeded to the United Kingdom in pursuit of his postgraduate studies.

He was employed as a Graduate Assistant in 1978, became a Lecturer II in 1982 and rose through the ladder to become a professor in 1998.

Prof. Amund specialized in Petroleum Microbiology and is currently the Vice-Chancellor of Elizade University, Ilara-Mokin, Ondo State.

Born in December 1952, Professor Olusimbo Aboaba bagged her B.Sc. in Biology from the University of Lagos in 1976. She began her career at the National Open University of Nigeria as a Graduate Demonstrator after which she transferred her services to UNILAG in 1984 as a Lecturer II. She specialized in Food Microbiology and became a Professor in 2010.

Meanwhile, Professor Adeyemi Adeleye was born in March 1953. He bagged his B.Sc. from UNILAG in 1978, his M.Sc. from the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife in 1981 and Ph.D. from the University of Ibadan in 1990.

He joined the services of the university in 1996 from Delta State University, Abraka, where he was acting Head of Department of Microbiology, He was also at the Yaba College of Technology, Lagos where he was also Head of Department.

Prof Adeleye who specialized in Medical Microbiology became a Professor in UNILAG in 2013 and served as Head of Department between 2013 and 2016.
