University of Lagos (UNILAG) Students participate in the 9th edition of the China International College Students’ “Internet+” Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition (CIIEC 2023).

Students of the University of Lagos (UNILAG), Nigeria have been invited to participate in the 9th edition of the China International College Students’ “Internet+” Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition (CIIEC 2023) hosted by Tianjin University (TJU), China.

The invitation was personally delivered to the University of Lagos management on Friday, July 21, 2023 by the Assistant President, Tianjin University, Liu Ning, and his team.

Assistant President Liu expressed Tianjin University’s enthusiasm in receiving the students of the University of Lagos in China for the competition scheduled for October 2023. He noted that Tianjin University looks forward to seeing undergraduate and postgraduate students from the University of Lagos who are

outstanding young entrepreneurs;

engaged in innovation;

striving to achieve their professional aspirations and build a better future for the world.

According to Asst. President Liu, the University of Lagos would be the first university in Nigeria and Africa at large to be invited to participate in the competition.

The Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Development Services), University of Lagos (UNILAG), Professor Ayodele V. Atsenuwa, who stood as proxy for the Vice-Chancellor of UNILAG, Professor Folasade T. Ogunsola, OON, FAS, appreciated Asst. President Liu and other delegates from Tianjin University for visiting UNILAG and honouring the institution with an invitation to CIIEC 2023

Professor Atsenuwa affirmed the University’s keen interest in innovation and entrepreneurship, and has particularly strengthened its campus in these areas in the past few years.  Some of these include:

the Innovation and Technology Management Office (ITMO) of the University of Lagos (UNILAG-ITMO),

the Entrepreneurship Skills and Development Centre (ESDC), UNILAG,

the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) Hub (NITHub) of the University of Lagos etc.

She informed that the university helps its students obtain patents for their innovations and propel the same to market.

In the spirit of camaraderie, Professor Atsenuwa extended an invitation to students of Tianjin University to visit the University of Lagos and learn from the university’s areas of strength. According to her, beyond the competition, this will give room for the cross-fertilisation of ideas and generation of new innovative and critical thinking among students of the two universities.

The meeting rounded up with the exchange of tokens of goodwill by both universities and group photographs. Subsequently, the team from Tianjin University were taken on a tour around the University of Lagos, Akoka campus to see innovative and entrepreneurial works on campus. The tour was handled by Dr. Adetoro Olaniyi Banwo, the Head of Chinese Unit, Department of Linguistics, African and Asian Studies, University of Lagos.
