UNILAG VC emphasis on Postgraduate education and the need to provide invaluable contextualized knowledge to improve multi-disciplinary research endeavours.

The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Lagos (UNILAG), Professor Folasade T. Ogunsola, OON, FAS has emphasized the crucial role of postgraduate education and the need for all stakeholders to provide invaluable contextualized knowledge by collaborating with the other faculties to improve multi-disciplinary research endeavours.

She stated this at the inauguration of the new Governing Board for the varsity’s School of Postgraduate Studies (SPGS).  The event was held on Thursday, September 14, 2023, at the SPGS Conference Room, in the presence of Directors, Deans, and other senior officials of the university such as  the Executive Director, UNILAG Business School, Prof. Mike Adebamowo; Director, Central Research Laboratory, Prof. Wellington Oyibo; former Director Quality Assurance and Servicom, Prof. Grace Otinwa and former Director, Academic Planning, Prof Mopelola Olusakin amongst others.

The Vice-Chancellor who was represented by the Director, Quality Assurance and Servicom, Professor Olufemi Saibu challenged members of the faculty to embrace collaborative knowledge with other stakeholders in the town, to reflect a “Mode 2” relationship of knowledge production rather than knowledge translation between universities and society.

He also stressed the need to increase ‘customer’ confidence in the services of the University of Lagos.

His words, ‘’… as one who ensures Quality Assurance, particularly in tracking and resolving deficiencies, we can improve our service delivery on the 4P’s which are hinged on People, Process, Propeller, and Product…‘’.

He explained that an organization’s Quality Assurance increases customer confidence and credibility; as well as improves efficiency and overall work processes.

While delivering his address, titled “Repositioning the Lagoon Lighthouse as Postgraduate School of the Future: Our Strategies and Tactics” the SPGS Dean, Professor Abraham Adewale Osinubi highlighted his plans and vision for the school which includes making UNILAG SPGS the best graduate school in Africa and Primus Inter Pares in the world.

According to him, the team under his watch is set to achieve excellence in staff, research, consultancies, academic content, and cutting-edge research to advance society.

While identifying that there were gaps in research works, he asserted with conviction that co‐creation models will be the blueprint for which there would be high potential for societal impact.

The inauguration ceremony presented a platform for discussions on issues such as publishing high-quality research journals, increasing online PG programmes, automation of all activities, enhancing research enterprise and establishment of a Doctoral Academy, Welfare of PG Teachers, and the creation of an Industry Advisory board amongst others.
