Nasarawa State University, Keffi (NSUK), has issued a health and safety advisory to staff and students following the reported confirmation of an Ebola case caused by the Bundibugyo virus in Abuja by the Federal Ministry of Health.
The university management urged members of the campus community to remain calm, vigilant and adhere strictly to preventive measures, citing the institution’s proximity to Abuja and frequent travel between the areas.

The management outlined the following safety measures for staff and students:
-
Practice Proper Hand Hygiene: Wash hands regularly with soap and running water or use alcohol-based hand sanitisers.
-
Avoid Contact with Bodily Fluids: Do not touch the blood, vomit or other bodily fluids of anyone suspected of being infected. Avoid contact with their personal belongings.
-
Watch for Symptoms: Be alert to symptoms such as sudden fever, headache, weakness, muscle pain, sore throat, vomiting and diarrhoea. Anyone feeling unwell should stay away from work or classes and seek immediate medical attention.
-
Report Suspected Exposure Promptly: Notify the relevant health authorities immediately if there is suspected direct contact with an infected person.
-
Maintain Clean Environments: Ensure that offices, hostels and lecture halls are kept clean and sanitary.
-
Avoid Spreading Misinformation: Refrain from sharing unverified reports or information that could cause panic. Rely on official updates from the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC), the Federal Ministry of Health and the World Health Organization (WHO).
-
Show Empathy and Avoid Stigmatisation: Members of the university community were urged not to stigmatise anyone. The management emphasised that Ebola spreads through direct contact with the bodily fluids of an infected person or contaminated materials, rather than simply being in the same city.
The university management stressed that protecting the health and safety of the campus community remained a collective responsibility and urged staff and students to comply with the preventive guidelines to help keep the institution safe.
