FUNAAB Inducts 113 Computer Science Graduates Into Computing Profession

The Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB) has inducted 113 graduating students from its Department of Computer Science into the computing profession through the Computer Professionals Registration Council of Nigeria (CPN).

The 11th CPN Induction Ceremony for the 2025/2026 graduating class was held on July 28, 2026, at the University's Postgraduate School Auditorium, with principal officers, CPN representatives, parents, staff, alumni, and other guests in attendance.

Representing the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Babatunde Kehinde, the Dean of the College of Engineering (COLENG), Professor Adedayo Badejo, congratulated the graduates, describing the induction as a significant milestone marking their transition from students to computing professionals.

Addressing the inductees on the theme, "Stepping into the Universe from the University," the Vice-Chancellor highlighted the growing importance of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in national development. He encouraged the new professionals to build careers in emerging fields such as Artificial Intelligence, Cybersecurity, Cloud Computing, Data Science, and the Internet of Things while maintaining high standards of professionalism, integrity, innovation, and continuous learning.

Earlier, the Acting Head of the Department of Computer Science, Dr. Thomas Ibharalu, traced the department's growth since its establishment in 1988 under the Department of Mathematical Sciences. He noted that it has developed into one of the university's largest academic departments and welcomed the recent establishment of the College of Computing Sciences, alongside the approval of six new computing-related degree programmes by the University Senate and the National Universities Commission (NUC).

He urged the graduating students to uphold ethical values, embrace innovation, particularly in Artificial Intelligence, and apply their knowledge to solving real-world challenges.

Delivering the keynote lecture, Professor of Artificial Intelligence and Data Analytics, Professor Williams Onifade, reminded the graduates that graduation marks the beginning of a lifelong journey of learning and professional development. He stressed that technical competence should be complemented by integrity, resilience, adaptability, leadership, and ethical conduct.

Professor Onifade also encouraged the inductees to use Artificial Intelligence responsibly, remain globally competitive, address local challenges through innovation, and leave lasting impacts on society.

The CPN Registrar and Secretary, represented by Mr. Komolafe Akinyemi, commended the keynote presentation and advised the newly inducted professionals to become job creators rather than job seekers. He also urged them to avoid cybercrime and other unethical practices, explaining that their induction as Graduate Members of the Council is the first step toward attaining Chartered Membership.

Mr. Akinyemi further announced the Federal Government's establishment of a professional Information Technology cadre, describing it as a major milestone for the computing profession. He congratulated the graduates and appreciated their parents and guardians for supporting them throughout their academic journey.

Also speaking, the Dean of the College of Computing Sciences, Professor Oluwasefunmi Arogundade, encouraged the graduates to transform their knowledge into practical solutions, convert ideas into innovations, and build careers that contribute to national development and global peace.

The ceremony featured the administration of the professional oath by CPN officials, formally inducting the 113 graduates into the computing profession. Other highlights included the presentation of gifts to the Department of Computer Science by the graduating class and the recognition of Jolaoso Jephthah as the Overall Best Graduating Student.
