Igbinedion University, Okada (IUO), has strengthened its academic partnership with Jiangxi College of Vocational and Foreign Studies, China, through a specialised technology training programme focused on Python programming, big data analysis and artificial intelligence (AI).

The capacity-building session, held on Monday, August 31, 2026, at the university’s Main Library Hall, formed part of the Tiangong Workshop Initiative, an expanding Nigeria-China collaboration focused on technology transfer, knowledge exchange, entrepreneurship and the development of digital competencies needed to compete in the global economy.

The Vice-Chancellor of Igbinedion University, Prof. Lawrence Ikechukwu Ezemonye, PhD, FAS, welcomed the Chinese facilitators and participants, describing the partnership as a significant milestone in the university’s pursuit of academic excellence, technological advancement and internationalisation.

Prof. Ezemonye noted that the relationship between the two institutions had continued to produce positive results and demonstrated the potential of academic cooperation between Nigeria and China.

The Vice-Chancellor recalled that a major milestone was recorded the previous year when two staff members and 10 students of IUO travelled to China for an exchange programme. During the visit, the two institutions formally signed a Memorandum of Understanding, providing a foundation for continued cooperation in training, research, capacity building and skills development.

“Our partnership with Jiangxi College of Vocational and Foreign Studies represents our commitment to creating meaningful international opportunities for our staff and students. We are particularly pleased that this collaboration is translating into practical skills development and knowledge exchange,” Prof. Ezemonye said.

The visiting facilitators, Ouyang Pan and Wu Weixiang, also led a session titled “Big Data: New Business and Entrepreneurship Opportunities for Nigerian Youths.”

During the session, the facilitators challenged participants to move beyond the perception that big data is a specialised field reserved only for programmers and technology experts.

Pan, who led the team, described big data as the continuous stream of digital information generated through everyday activities, including education, business, social media, online shopping and other human interactions.

“You do not need to be a programmer. Data is a thinking skill for every teacher and every student—the ability to see patterns and make better choices,” he said.

The Tiangong Workshop Initiative is expected to extend beyond the current physical training programme.

Plans include online courses in big data analytics, cross-border e-commerce and digital marketing, as well as expert-led practical workshops and further exchange opportunities.

The expanded programme is expected to expose Nigerian students and educators to Chinese academia, technology and industry while further strengthening the partnership between Igbinedion University and Jiangxi College of Vocational and Foreign Studies.
