The outgone Chief Medical Director of Usmanu Danfodiyo University Teaching Hospital, Prof. Anas Ahmad Sabir, has formally handed over the affairs of the Hospital to the Acting Chief Medical Director, Prof. Usman Muhammad Sani, following the expiration of his tenure on 17 May 2026.

Prof. Anas Ahmad Sabir served as the Chief Medical Director of the Hospital from 17 May 2018 to 17 May 2026.

The appointment of Prof. Usman Muhammad Sani as Acting Chief Medical Director was approved by the Honourable Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Prof. Muhammad Ali Pate, CON, through a letter dated 14 May 2026 and signed by the Director of Teaching Hospitals, Dr. Okpikpi Okpako, on behalf of the Honourable Coordinating Minister.

The appointment letter stated in part: “You are to continue to manage and superintend over the affairs of the Hospital pending approval for the appointment of a substantive Chief Medical Director by Mr. President.”

During the handing-over ceremony, Prof. Sabir highlighted the major responsibilities of the Chief Medical Director, noting that the CMD serves as the Chief Executive Officer of the Hospital and is responsible for its day-to-day administration. He added that the CMD reports to the Governing Board of the hospital, and in the absence of the board, reports directly to the Honourable Minister of Health.

The outgone CMD also highlighted major achievements recorded during his administration, including human resource development, infrastructural development, automation of Hospital services, and advancements in complex clinical procedures such as radiotherapy services, open-heart surgeries, neurosurgeries, and kidney transplant programmes.

He further listed the procurement of advanced medical and diagnostic equipment, including a LINAC machine, a 1.5 Tesla MRI machine, and a 32-slice GE CT Scan machine, as well as the expansion of training schools within the hospital.

Prof. Sabir, however, identified electricity supply as one of the major challenges confronting the Hospital, revealing that Kaduna Electric brings monthly electricity bills to the hospital ranging from one hundred million to one hundred and thirty million naira.

He expressed deep appreciation to members of his management team, stressing that the achievements recorded during his tenure would not have been possible without their support, dedication, and cooperation. He urged them to extend the same support to the Acting Chief Medical Director, whom he described as capable of consolidating existing achievements and introducing new innovations.

In his remarks, the Acting Chief Medical Director, Prof. Usman Muhammad Sani, described Prof. Sabir as courageous, goal-driven, and a born leader who “came, saw, and conquered.”

He stated that the outgone CMD would leave behind a huge vacuum that would be difficult to fill, but expressed confidence that, with determination, Allah’s guidance, and the support of members of staff, the enormous responsibilities of the office would be effectively managed.

In their separate comments, heads of departments and units present at the ceremony extolled the leadership qualities and achievements of Prof. Sabir, praying to Almighty Allah to continue to guide and reward him abundantly for his service to the hospital. They also prayed for wisdom, strength, and success for the Acting Chief Medical Director in steering the affairs of the hospital forward.
