University of Abuja Appoints New Registrar and University Librarian
The Governing Council of the University of Abuja, led by the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of Council, Distinguished Senator Dr. Olanrewaju Tejuoso, has approved the appointment of Mal. Alkasim Musa Umar as the substantive Registrar and Dr. Rose Lade Mommoh as the substantive University Librarian.
The Governing Council of the University of Abuja, led by the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of Council, Distinguished Senator Dr. Olanrewaju Tejuoso, has approved the appointment of Mal. Alkasim Musa Umar as the substantive Registrar and Dr. Rose Lade Mommoh as the substantive University Librarian.
The appointments take effect from Friday, July 10, 2026, following approval at the Council's 101st Regular Meeting held on Friday, July 10, and Saturday, July 11, 2026.
Both officials will serve a single five-year term in line with the Universities (Miscellaneous Provisions) (Amendment) Act and the University's governing regulations.

Vice-Chancellor, Professor Hakeem Babatunde Fawehinmi, congratulated the appointees, describing their appointments as coming "at a critical time in our journey as we continue to reposition the University of Abuja as a globally competitive institution."
Alkasim Musa Umar holds a Bachelor of Science and a Master's degree in Business Administration from the University of Maiduguri, alongside professional certifications from the Digital Bridge Institute and Souters, United Kingdom.
He began his career at the Maritime Academy of Nigeria, Oron, where he served as Liaison Officer in Abuja from 1999 to 2002 before taking up responsibilities in the Junior Establishment. He later joined the University of Abuja Registry, where he has spent the past 17 years serving in several divisions, including the Academic Affairs Division, Establishment Division, TETFund Desk Office, and as Faculty Officer for the Faculties of Education and Agriculture.
Before his appointment, Umar served for eight years as Deputy Registrar, most recently heading the Institute of Education at the University of Abuja. In that role, he supervised administrative and registry operations, coordinated credentials screening, and served as Secretary to the Institute's Management Board.
He has also served as Secretary or member of several university committees, including the University Undergraduate Admissions Committee, Senate Committee on Core Curriculum Minimum Academic Standards, University Portal Committee, and the Vice-Chancellor Handing-Over Committee.
In 2024, Umar represented the University of Abuja at several international engagements, including the International University Exhibition in Nairobi, the Wageningen Innovation Challenge in the Netherlands, and the International Association of Universities Conference in Tokyo.
He is married and has children.
The newly appointed University Librarian, Dr. Rose Lade Mommoh, holds a Bachelor of Library Science from the University of Maiduguri, a Master of Library Science from Bayero University, Kano, and a PhD in Information Science from the University of Maiduguri.
She joined the University of Abuja in 1999 as a Graduate Librarian and steadily rose through the ranks, becoming Deputy University Librarian and Associate Professor in 2020.
With more than 25 years of experience in university librarianship, Dr. Mommoh has built expertise in library administration, collection development, digital library services, research support, and strategic information management.
She has held several leadership positions within the University Library, including Head of the Circulation Unit, Collection Development, and Readers' Services at the Engineering Library.
Until her appointment, she served as the Postgraduate Coordinator in the Department of Library and Information Science.

Dr. Mommoh has published extensively in her field and presented scholarly papers at conferences within and outside Nigeria, including in China and Poland. She is a registered member of the Librarians Registration Council of Nigeria and the Nigerian Library Association.
