ACU Congratulates Council Member Dr. Dada on Pioneering Telerobotic Surgery

Ajayi Crowther University (ACU), Oyo, has congratulated a member of its Governing Council, Dr. Adedamola Dada, on the successful performance of West Africa’s first telerobotic surgery.

Dr. Dada is the Chief Executive Officer of Redeemer’s Health Village, Mowe, Ogun State, where a team of medical specialists performed the groundbreaking procedure on a patient located about 500 kilometres away in Abuja.

The surgery, a right radical nephrectomy involving the removal of a kidney affected by a tumour, was carried out at Redeemer’s Health Village in collaboration with a healthcare facility in Abuja. Surgeons at the Ogun State facility controlled the surgical robotic system connected to equipment at the Abuja hospital via an internet connection.

Reacting to the feat, the Vice-Chancellor of Ajayi Crowther University, Prof. Ebunoluwa Oduwole, congratulated Dr. Dada on behalf of the University management, saying the institution is proud of him and happy to be associated with him.

Prof. Oduwole wished him more success in his medical practice, noting that the achievement would go a long way in shaping the trajectory of medical practice in Nigeria.

In his response, Dr. Dada described the procedure as a major development in Nigeria’s adoption of advanced medical technology, explaining that the technology could allow specialists outside Nigeria to perform complex operations on patients in the country without being physically present in the operating theatre.

The development marks a significant step in Nigeria’s use of robotic technology for complex surgical procedures and could expand access to specialised medical care across the country.
