FUAMB Marks Maiden World Registered Dietitian Nutritionist Day with "Power of Nutrition"
The Department of Nutrition and Dietetics at the Federal University of Agriculture, Mubi (FUAMB), joined the global community to commemorate World Registered Dietitian Nutritionist Day, observed annually on March 11.
This event marked the department's maiden celebration of the global health observance, bringing together staff and students to highlight the critical role of Registered Dietitian Nutritionists in promoting optimal nutrition, preventing diseases, and improving the health and well-being of communities.
The week-long celebration, themed "Discover the Power of Nutrition," aims to underscore the vital role of dietetics in healthcare and community well-being.
The celebration commenced on 10th March 2026, with an insightful familiarization visit to the Federal Medical Centre (FMC). During this visit, FUAMB students observed the practical application of medical nutrition therapy in a clinical setting, engaging directly with practitioners. This provided valuable real-world exposure to the profession. The awareness campaign continued on March 11th with an Awareness Walk and Rally. Led by the Acting Dean of the Faculty of Agriculture, Professor Makeri Muhammed, and the Acting Head of Department, Mr Aliyu Abdulhamid Waziri, students and staff conducted anthropometric checks (height, weight, BMI) before a public rally, demonstrating foundational tools used by dietitians.
Addressing students during the occasion, Mr Aliyu Abdulhamid Waziri, the representative of the Head of Department of Nutrition and Dietetics at FUAMB, emphasized the significance of the celebration and its relevance to the profession. He spoke to students on the importance of the event and the broader mission of dietetics in society. Mr Aliyu Abdulhamid Waziri explained that the core focus of the profession is to promote improved nutrition among Nigerians through education, research, advocacy, and evidence-based dietary practices. He encouraged the students to remain dedicated to their academic training and professional development so they could emerge as competent nutrition experts capable of addressing the nation’s nutrition challenges.
In his goodwill message, the Vice-Chancellor of Federal University of Agriculture, Mubi, Prof Bitrus Dawi Tarfa congratulated the department on the successful celebration. Speaking on behalf of the university’s council, management, and staff, the Vice-Chancellor encouraged students to be mindful of the knowledge and professional values being imparted to them by their lecturers. The VC further assured them of the institution’s unwavering commitment to supporting all professional disciplines within the university to ensure the production of skilled and productive graduates who will contribute meaningfully to Nigeria’s health system and serve as worthy ambassadors of the university. This active participation of top university management highlights FUAMB's dedication to producing skilled nutrition graduates and promoting public health.
Among the personalities present at the event were the Registrar of Federal University of Agriculture, Mubi, Mrs Fatima Saidu Bashir, the University Librarian, Dr Yahuza Aliyu, the University Bursar, and Dr Taofiq Isiaka, alongside other members of staff of the institution.
