FUTIA ICT Director Appointed ICSP Akwa Ibom State Coordinator

The Acting Director of Information and Communication Technology (DICT) and Lecturer in the Department of Cyber Security, School of Computing and Information Technology, Federal University of Technology, Ikot Abasi (FUTIA), Dr. Abasiama Godwin Akpan, has been appointed the Akwa Ibom State Coordinator of the Institute of Cybersecurity Professionals (ICSP).

The Acting Director of Information and Communication Technology (DICT) and Lecturer in the Department of Cyber Security, School of Computing and Information Technology, Federal University of Technology, Ikot Abasi (FUTIA), Dr. Abasiama Godwin Akpan, has been appointed the Akwa Ibom State Coordinator of the Institute of Cybersecurity Professionals (ICSP).

Dr. Akpan, who is also a member of other professional bodies, was appointed following the consideration and approval of the national leadership and Secretariat of ICSP.

The appointment took effect on August 16, 2026, and will run for an initial period of two years, subject to satisfactory performance, compliance with the Institute’s policies and subsequent renewal or review.

The appointment letter was signed by the Registrar General/CEO of ICSP, Amb. Dr. Abdulwaheed Odewale, who expressed confidence that Dr. Akpan’s experience and leadership would make significant contributions to the development of ICSP and the broader cybersecurity, Information and Communication Technology ecosystem in Akwa Ibom State and beyond.

The Institute congratulated Dr. Akpan on his appointment and expressed its expectation that his leadership would advance cybersecurity awareness, capacity development, research, professional excellence and digital resilience across the state.

According to the appointment letter, the appointment recognises Dr. Akpan’s professional standing, academic contribution, leadership capacity and commitment to advancing cybersecurity education, professional development, digital safety and cybersecurity resilience in Nigeria.

As ICSP State Coordinator, Dr. Akpan will serve as the principal representative of the Institute in Akwa Ibom State and operate under the strategic direction of the ICSP National Secretariat and National Coordinator.

His responsibilities will include promoting ICSP membership and facilitating the engagement of cybersecurity professionals, academics, students, researchers and other relevant stakeholders across the state.

He is also expected to coordinate and support cybersecurity awareness campaigns, seminars, workshops, public education programmes and community outreach, as well as training, mentorship, professional development, certification and other cybersecurity capacity-building initiatives.

The appointment is considered significant to FUTIA as a technology-focused university, as it further positions the institution to contribute to the development of cybersecurity expertise, digital innovation and ICT capacity in Akwa Ibom State and beyond.

Meanwhile, the Vice-Chancellor of FUTIA, Prof. Leo Daniel, has congratulated Dr. Akpan on behalf of the University Management and the entire University community following his appointment and assumption of office as the ICSP State Coordinator.

Dr. Akpan obtained his Bachelor’s degree (B.Sc.) in Computer Science from the University of Calabar in 2001.

He subsequently obtained a Master’s degree (M.Sc.) in Information Technology (Intelligent Systems) and a Master of Business Administration (MBA) from the National Open University of Nigeria in 2014 and 2016, respectively.

He further obtained another Master’s degree (M.Sc.) in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) from the University of Port Harcourt in 2018.

Dr. Akpan earned his Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Computer Security from Ebonyi State University, Nigeria, in 2022.

He is currently pursuing a second Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degree in Cyber Security (Cyber-Physical Systems) at the Africa Centre of Excellence on Technology Enhanced Learning (ACETEL), Abuja.

He is a Fellow of the Institute of Cyber Security Professionals (ICSP) and an Associate Fellow of the African Academics Network (AFAAN), among other professional affiliations.
