The Lagos State University Centre for Afro-Brazilian Studies (LASUCAS) has announced the commencement of admission into its Portuguese and Yoruba programmes for the 2025/2026 academic session.
The Lagos State University Centre for Afro-Brazilian Studies (LASUCAS) has announced the commencement of admission into its Portuguese and Yoruba programmes for the 2025/2026 academic session.
According to the Registrar and Secretary to Council, Emmanuel A. Fanu, MANUPA, MNIM, MCIPM, FCAI, the programmes are structured to equip students with relevant linguistic and cultural knowledge for global opportunities.
Available Programmes:

CELPE-Bras Training Programme for Scholarship in Brazil
- Prepares candidates for Certificate of Proficiency in Portuguese Language for Foreigners (CELPE-Bras).
- A requirement for undergraduate and postgraduate scholarships in Brazil.
Admission Requirements:
- Minimum of five (5) credits in WAEC/SSCE.
- Age: 17–23 years for undergraduate scholarship.
- At least a Second Class Honours (Lower Division) for postgraduate scholarship.
Duration: Six (6) months.

Diploma in Portuguese and Brazilian Studies
- Qualifies graduates for admission into Portuguese/English degree at LASU.
Admission Requirements:
- Minimum of four (4) credits including English at not more than two sittings.
- OR three (3) credits at one sitting plus five years’ work experience.
- OR mature candidates above 35 years with three (3) credits.
Duration: Four (4) semesters / two (2) academic sessions (part-time).

Certificate in Portuguese and Brazilian Studies
- Designed for those intending to travel to Lusophone countries for study, trade, news coverage, or tourism.
- Qualifies graduates for admission into the Diploma in Portuguese.
Admission Requirements:
- WASC/GCE O-Level with three (3) credits including English at not more than two sittings.
- OR three (3) credits at one sitting plus five years’ work experience.
Duration: Six (6) months (two modules of three months each, part-time).

Proficiency Certificate in Yoruba for Non-Native Speakers
- Targets foreigners and Nigerians interested in Yoruba Language, Literature, Culture, and Communication.
Admission Requirements:
- Foreigners with a minimum of secondary school certificate.
- Nigerians with at least three (3) credits in WAEC/NECO or equivalent.
- Graduates of higher institutions from any discipline.
- Mature candidates with 10 years’ work experience or above 35 years.
Duration: Eight (8) weeks (full-time).
