LASU Commissions Handball Spectators’ Gallery Donated by LASUED Vice-Chancellor

Lagos State University (LASU) has commissioned a newly constructed Handball Court Spectators’ Gallery at its main campus in Ojo, Lagos, in a move aimed at strengthening sports development and improving the experience of spectators during sporting events.

Lagos State University (LASU) has commissioned a newly constructed Handball Court Spectators’ Gallery at its main campus in Ojo, Lagos, in a move aimed at strengthening sports development and improving the experience of spectators during sporting events.

The facility, unveiled on June 18, 2026, was donated by the Vice-Chancellor of Lagos State University of Education, Bidemi Bilkis Lafiaji-Okuneye, a distinguished alumna and former Acting Dean of Students' Affairs of LASU.

Speaking at the commissioning ceremony, the Director of the Lagos State University Directorate of Advancement (LASUDA), Rafiu Okuneye, described the project as a major contribution to sports development and institutional growth. He noted that the gallery would provide greater comfort for spectators while encouraging sporting excellence within the university community.

Professor Okuneye also commended the donor for her generosity and urged the university community to ensure proper maintenance of the facility.

In her remarks, Professor Lafiaji-Okuneye described the occasion as a deeply personal one, noting that handball remains a sport she is passionate about. She expressed optimism that the gallery would encourage greater participation in sports, improve the viewing experience for spectators, and contribute to the development of talented athletes.

Reflecting on her connection to the institution, she described LASU as her academic and professional foundation, emphasizing that the donation was a gesture of gratitude to an institution that played a pivotal role in her growth.

She further stressed that the development of great universities should not be left solely to governments, urging alumni, stakeholders, and benefactors to embrace a culture of giving back to their institutions.

The Vice-Chancellor of LASU, Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, expressed appreciation for the donation, describing the facility as a symbol of legacy, service, institutional pride, and commitment to youth and sports development.

She commended Professor Lafiaji-Okuneye for her continued contributions to the university and also acknowledged the role of LASUDA in facilitating the successful execution of the project.

Following the formal commissioning, Professor Olatunji-Bello led members of the management teams of both LASU and LASUED, alongside invited guests, on a tour of the facility.

The event concluded with an exhibition handball match between LASU and LASUED teams, highlighting the strong relationship between the two institutions while promoting healthy sporting competition.

The vote of thanks was delivered by the Chairman of the LASU Sports Council, Simeon Dosunmu.

The newly commissioned gallery is expected to enhance the sporting atmosphere at LASU and serve as a lasting contribution to the university's sports infrastructure.
