LASU Ranks Ahead of Covenant University, UNILAG in 2026 Global Sustainability Rankings

Lagos State University ranks 493rd globally to lead Nigerian universities in the 2026 UI GreenMetric World University Sustainability Rankings.

LASU recorded an overall score of 7,045 points to take first position among participating Nigerian universities in the 17th edition of the global sustainability ranking.

Covenant University followed in second place nationally and 864th globally with 6,032.5 points, while Mountain Top University ranked third in Nigeria and 1,029th worldwide with 5,560 points.

Ahmadu Bello University occupied the fourth position among Nigerian institutions and 1,032nd globally, scoring 5,552.5 points.

Thomas Adewumi University, University of Delta Agbor and the University of Lagos followed in the Nigerian ranking, placing 1,285th, 1,342nd and 1,388th globally respectively.

Adamawa State University ranked eighth nationally and 1,461st globally, while Joseph Sarwuan Tarka University and Maryam Abacha American University of Nigeria, Kano, occupied the ninth and 10th positions in Nigeria, ranking 1,653rd and 1,657th globally.

Babcock University completed the list of 11 Nigerian universities shown in the 2026 ranking, placing 1,971st globally with an overall score of 1,480 points.

The 2026 edition, described by the ranking organisers as the largest global university ranking system dedicated to institutional sustainability performance, assessed 2,016 institutions from 110 countries.

The latest edition introduced the theme, “Advancing Sustainable Campuses through Governance, Digitalization, and Integrated Performance,” reflecting a broader emphasis on how universities incorporate sustainability into institutional governance, digital systems and overall campus performance.

The ranking is designed to assess universities based on their sustainability performance rather than solely on conventional measures such as academic reputation, research output or graduate employability.

LASU’s first-place position among Nigerian institutions therefore places its sustainability performance at the forefront of the country’s participation in the 2026 global assessment.

Covenant University’s second-place national position and Mountain Top University’s third place also placed Nigerian private universities prominently among the country’s leading institutions in the sustainability ranking.

The 2026 results further show a significant spread in the performance of Nigerian institutions, with the University of Lagos ranking seventh nationally despite its location in the same metropolitan environment as LASU.

The UI GreenMetric World University Rankings have increasingly become a reference point for universities seeking to measure and improve their environmental and sustainability practices, while encouraging institutions to integrate sustainability into campus planning and management.

The organisers said the 2026 edition was intended to encourage greater participation by universities worldwide and strengthen collective efforts towards building more sustainable campuses.

For LASU, the latest ranking comes as the university begins a new five-year administration under its newly appointed Vice-Chancellor, Prof Ayodeji Badejo, who has identified infrastructure and digital transformation, research and global visibility, academic excellence and financial sustainability among the priorities of her administration.

The university’s leading position among Nigerian institutions in the 2026 sustainability ranking adds another dimension to the institution’s current drive to strengthen its overall institutional performance and visibility.
