LASU Retains UI GreenMetric Coordinatorship, Secures International Co-Chairmanship

Lagos State University (LASU) has recorded another milestone in its sustainability drive after the UI GreenMetric Steering Committee renewed the University’s National and Regional Coordinatorship and elevated it to the Co-Chairmanship of key sessions at UI GreenMetric international events for the 2026/2027 academic session.

The recognition, conveyed in a congratulatory message from the new Chairperson of UI GreenMetric, Dr Vishnu Juwono, was described as an acknowledgement of LASU’s sustained commitment to environmental sustainability and its growing leadership in the global sustainability community.

The message was conveyed to the Vice-Chancellor, Distinguished Professor Ibiyemi Ibilola Olatunji-Bello, mni, NPOM, fspsp, by Prof. Adejuwon Adeneye, Director, Directorate of Research Management and Innovation, who is currently participating in the 12th International Workshop on GreenMetric at Trier University of Applied Sciences, Umwelt-Campus, Birkenfeld, Germany.

According to Dr Juwono, the renewal of LASU’s National and Regional Coordinatorship, alongside its elevation to Co-Chairmanship of key international UI GreenMetric sessions, reflects the University’s consistency and strategic commitment to environmental sustainability.

Prof. Adeneye described the development as “a monumental win for LASU and a resounding validation” of the administration’s sustainability agenda, adding that the recognition demonstrates the University’s commitment to institutional excellence and its ambition to become one of the world’s leading eco-friendly and sustainable universities.

Reacting to the recognition, the Vice-Chancellor described the achievement as a collective accomplishment for the University community.

Prof. Olatunji-Bello said the recognition was both an honour and a responsibility, noting that it demonstrated that LASU’s sustainability efforts were producing measurable results and attracting international recognition.

She congratulated members of the University community whose efforts had contributed to the achievement and reaffirmed the administration’s commitment to deepening sustainability initiatives, strengthening partnerships and making environmental sustainability an integral part of LASU’s institutional development.

LASU’s latest recognition further strengthens its profile within the global sustainability community and reinforces its efforts to integrate sustainable practices, research and environmental resilience into University development.

LASU joined the UI GreenMetric rankings in September 2022 and quickly established itself as a regional leader. Its strongest continental performance came in 2024, when it ranked first in Sub-Saharan Africa and 23rd overall in Africa.

Despite the rapid growth of the UI GreenMetric Sustainable University Rankings—from nearly 1,000 participating institutions in 2022 to 1,745 in 2025—LASU has consistently remained within the top half globally, recording an overall score of more than 6,000 points.
