MAU, YOLA Partners with Adamawa State Government to Launch Tree-Planting Campaign on World Environment Day 2026
Modibbo Adama University Yola, today joined the rest of the world in commemorating World Environment Day 2026, bringing together academics, government officials, and stakeholders under the theme: "Inspired by Nature. For Climate. For Our Future." The event was held at the College of Medical Sciences Lecture Theatre, of the institution.
Delivering the welcome address, Dean of the Faculty of Environmental Sciences, Prof. N. A. Udeani, set the tone for the occasion, stressing the importance of this year's theme and calling on all present to learn from nature and act decisively in the face of climate change and pollution.
The Vice Chancellor, Prof. Ibrahim Umar, represented by the Dean of the Faculty of Agriculture, Prof. Abubakar Ibrahim, welcomed guests and commended the organizers of the event, pledging the university's full support in building a sustainable environment.
One of the highlights of the occasion was the charge delivered by the Adamawa State Commissioner for Environment, Alhaji Mamman Sodiq, who urged citizens to cultivate a culture of planting and nurturing trees.

He disclosed that the state government has launched a tree planting campaign and has placed a ban on the cutting of trees across Adamawa State.
Two academic papers were presented at the event. Dubi Brenge Mimi of the Nigeria Environmental Society (NES), Adamawa State Chapter, presented on “Circular economy and climate-smart waste management”, while Prof. F. A. Ilesanmi of the Department of Urban and Regional Planning, MAU Yola, spoke on “climate-resilient urban planning and sustainable infrastructure development in rapidly urbanizing African cities.”
Both presentations were followed by an interactive session that drew robust contributions from participants.
The event climaxed with a group photograph and a symbolic tree planting session, in which dignitaries and participants put their hands to the soil in a living demonstration of the day's commitment to environmental stewardship.
