NAFDAC Delegation Visits UDUTH for Pharmacovigilance Follow-Up, Meets Acting CMD

The Acting Chief Medical Director of Usmanu Danfodiyo University Teaching Hospital, UDUTH, Sokoto, Professor Usman Sani, on Wednesday, August 5, 2026, received a delegation from the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control, NAFDAC.
The delegation was led by Hajiya Hauwa Makama from the Agency’s National Headquarters, alongside the Sokoto State Coordinator, Alhaji Abdussalam Lawal. The visit was part of a follow-up engagement with the hospital’s Tuberculosis, TB, team following an earlier facility assessment on pharmacovigilance.
The delegation emphasized that pharmacovigilance is vital to ensuring patient safety through the effective detection, monitoring, and reporting of adverse drug reactions.
They encouraged the hospital’s Pharmacovigilance Unit to intensify patient sensitization and public awareness on the importance of reporting adverse drug reactions. They observed that awareness is relatively higher in Abuja and Lagos, and expressed confidence that sustained advocacy would improve public participation in Sokoto State.
In his remarks, Professor Sani welcomed the delegation and commended NAFDAC for its commitment to safeguarding public health. He described the Agency as a critical stakeholder in Nigeria’s healthcare system, noting that products bearing NAFDAC registration inspire confidence among healthcare professionals and the general public.
The Acting CMD also appreciated NAFDAC’s commitment to conducting follow-up visits, describing them as essential to strengthening healthcare delivery. While acknowledging higher literacy levels in cities such as Abuja and Lagos, he noted that Sokoto has its own unique challenges, and emphasized that literacy plays a significant role in promoting awareness and encouraging active participation in pharmacovigilance activities.
The visit reaffirmed the shared commitment of UDUTH and NAFDAC to strengthening pharmacovigilance, enhancing patient safety, and promoting continuous public education on the safe use of medicines.
