Nigerian Educational Research and Development Council Announces New Deadline for 2026 Textbook Assessment and Ranking

Nigerian Educational Research and Development Council (NERDC) has extended the deadline for the submission of textbooks and instructional materials for assessment and ranking to July 3, 2026.

The extension, approved by the Federal Ministry of Education, follows requests from publishers and other stakeholders who sought additional time to meet the requirements of the new textbook assessment framework.

In a public notice issued on Friday, NERDC said the extension applies to Phase One of the 2026 assessment and ranking exercise, which covers textbooks for Primary One, Primary Four, Junior Secondary School One (JSS1), Senior Secondary School One (SS1), as well as Phase Two categories including Primary Two, Primary Five, JSS2 and SS2.

The council explained that all textbooks, including those previously assessed for the affected classes, must be resubmitted for assessment or reassessment in line with the revised guidelines.

According to NERDC, books intended for ranking will first undergo assessment based on newly approved standards, procedures and benchmarks before being considered for ranking.

The council noted that the exercise is part of ongoing efforts to improve the quality of instructional materials used in schools and ensure that textbooks align with current curriculum requirements.

Publishers, authors and other stakeholders in the book industry have been urged to take advantage of the extension to complete their submissions and comply fully with the approved guidelines.

NERDC stressed that the July 3 deadline is final and that no further extension will be granted.

It added that textbooks submitted after the deadline will not be considered for assessment, reassessment or ranking during the current phase.

The council expects the assessment and ranking of all submitted textbooks and instructional resources to be completed by July 31, 2026.
