NWUK Holds First Congregation Meeting Under Prof. Amina Salihi Bayero, Elects New Standing Committee Chairman
Northwest University, Kano (NWUK), on Wednesday, 7 October 2026, held its 8th Congregation Meeting at the Hafiz Abubakar Auditorium, City Campus, marking the first Congregation Meeting under the leadership of the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Amina Salihi Bayero.
The meeting brought together members of the University Congregation to deliberate on issues concerning the institution, receive the Vice-Chancellor’s report on the activities and progress of the University, and conduct elections for representatives into various statutory committees and organs of the University.
The outgoing Chairman of the Congregation Standing Committee, Dr. Lawan Idris, delivered his address, after which the Chairman of the Congregation, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Amina Salihi Bayero, formally declared the Congregation open.
In her brief remarks, the Vice-Chancellor expressed pleasure at welcoming members to the first Congregation Meeting under her leadership, stressing the importance of unity, mutual respect and collective commitment to the continued development of the University.
A major highlight of the meeting was the dissolution of the outgoing Congregation Standing Committee and the election of a new Committee. Dr. Aminu Abdulkadir Mahmud was elected as the new Chairman of the Congregation Standing Committee.

In his welcome address, the newly elected Chairman of the Congregation Standing Committee, Dr. Aminu Abdulkadir Mahmud, expressed appreciation to members of the Congregation for the confidence reposed in him and pledged to provide effective leadership in the discharge of the Committee’s responsibilities.
The Vice-Chancellor thereafter presented her detailed report to members of the Congregation, highlighting major developments, achievements and initiatives of the University during the period under review.
Following the presentation, an Electoral Committee was constituted and later conducted elections for members representing the Congregation on various statutory committees and organs of the University.
In the election for one representative of the Congregation on the Governing Council, Dr. Muhammad Nafi’u emerged victorious with 211 votes, defeating Dr. Nazifi Umar, who scored 153 votes.
The election also produced representatives of the various Faculties on the Senate, with all candidates emerging unopposed as follows:
1. Faculty of Basic Medical Sciences: Dr. Muhammad Ibrahim Usman
2. Faculty of Basic Clinical Sciences: Dr. Ishaq Muhammad Rabiu
3. Faculty of Education: Dr. Auwalu Bello Ibrahim
4. Faculty of Computing: Dr. Zawwali Sabitu Paki
5. Faculty of Clinical Sciences: Dr. Sadiya Haruna Warshu
6. Faculty of Humanities: Maryam Shehu Maimota
7. Faculty of Law: Dr. Abubakar Balarabe Kura
8. Faculty of Social and Management Sciences: Dr. Muhammad Sabi’u Bako
9. Faculty of Science: Dr. Umar Labaran Bashir
For the other statutory committees, Dr. Alkasim Hamisu Abdu was elected into the Disciplinary Committee, securing 189 votes, against Sa’ad Bello Sa’ad, who scored 181 votes.
Similarly, Dr. Aisha Hassan Sulaiman won the University Management Committee election with 193 votes, defeating Ibrahim Danjuma, who scored 180 votes.
In the election for the Central Admission Committee, Dr. Lawan Muhammad Gimi emerged winner with 193 votes, while Abdullahi Shehu Usman scored 175 votes.
For the Housing Committee, Dr. Nura Abubakar Gwadabe emerged victorious with 188 votes, against Engineer Bashir Ahmad, who scored 178 votes.
The Budget Monitoring Committee election was won by Dr. Tasi’u Tijjani Sabi’u, who secured 196 votes, defeating Nasiru Sani Wali, who scored 171 votes.
The 8th Congregation Meeting therefore marked a significant milestone in the administration of Northwest University, Kano, as members collectively reviewed the progress of the institution and elected representatives who will contribute to its governance and continued development.
