NYSC Penalizes Corps Member Raye for Criticizing Tinubu’s Government

The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has officially sanctioned Rita Ushie, widely known on social media as Raye, following her public criticism of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration.
Raye gained widespread attention in March 2025 when she voiced her frustrations about Nigeria’s worsening economic situation, describing the government as “terrible” and out of touch with the struggles of ordinary citizens.
Her comments quickly went viral and sparked debate online.
As a result, NYSC authorities summoned Raye to appear before a disciplinary panel at the Iyana Ipaja orientation camp in Lagos.
Despite offering an apology and having only one month left in her mandatory service year, the panel extended her service by an additional 60 days as a punitive measure.
The decision has drawn backlash from civil rights groups and prominent human rights advocates, including Omoyele Sowore and Festus Ogun.
Both have condemned the NYSC’s action, calling it a violation of Raye’s right to free speech and an assault on democratic principles.
