A dedicated group has launched the ‘Education Champions League Quiz Competition’ for secondary schools in Rivers State, with the semi-finals set for this Saturday.

A group called ‘August Meeting’ has launched a series of activities to improve the reading culture among the younger generation in Rivers State, Nigeria, due to concerns over the deteriorating standard of education and poor student performance in examinations.

The group, passionate about education in Rivers State, initiated the ‘Education Champions League Quiz Competition’ for secondary schools, with the semi-final stage scheduled for this Saturday. The competition is fully sponsored and offers rewards.

Kingsley Wenenda Wali, an educationist and one of the driving forces behind the group, emphasized the necessity of the quiz competition, noting the shared spirit among males and females in Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital. Wali, a former chieftain of the All Progressives Congress, highlighted the support from prominent city figures and the community’s embrace of their identity as Port Harcourt residents.

Wali expressed gratitude for the overwhelming support for the August Meeting’s book review program and the Education Champions League quiz competition. He acknowledged the contributions of numerous supporters, including Chief Dumo Lulu-Briggs, Engr. Adokiye Tombomieye, High Chief Uzoma Ekpecham, Prof. Eme Ekekwe, Datom Kio-Lawson, Mrs. Ikem Asoka, Mrs. Nkem Asoka, Pastor Segun Owolabi, and Ms. Anni Abdulsalaam.

The ECL Quiz Competition offers cash prizes of N10 million for first place, N5 million for second place, and N2.5 million for third place. The semi-finals will feature eight schools, including Federal Government Girls College, Enitonna High School, Goldsprings Secondary School, Government Girls Secondary School, Oromineke, Seacrest Preparatory School, Aladumo International School, Government Comprehensive Secondary School, and Charles Dale Memorial International School. The finals will be held at the Alliance Francaise Hall in GRA, Port Harcourt, on October 26th, 2024.

Wali emphasized the importance of community support and the celebration of education, stating that education is a celebration of knowledge, not a scam.
