Salem University Law Don Dr Sunday Jossy Adejemiluwa Calls for Laws to Regulate Use of Drones in Modern Warfare

Salem University law scholar, Dr Sunday Jossy Adejemiluwa, has called for legal frameworks to regulate drone technology in modern warfare and protect human rights.

Dr Jossy made the call after his successful defense of his Ph.D Thesis at the Facility to Law, Salem University Lokoja on Wednesday.

According to Dr Jossy, finding has proven that drone technology in warfare is trending across the globe, but with no existing legal framework for the usage.

There are no laws regulating them in the international system. So it was part of my recommendation that there is need at international level for laws to be made so as to avoid human rights abuses that comes with the usage of modern warfare like drone, Robotics etc”

Dr Jossy who is the first Ph.D holder from from the faculty of Law of the university said, “Modern warfare now require the use of unmanned drone technology, but in Nigeria as in other parts of the world, the existing legal framework for warfare never made provision for the use of drone technology.

“So, this research has found that existing gap and drawing the attention of the international community including Nigeria to initiate the legal framework immediately”

Prof. Joshua Igono, the pioneer dean faculty of Law Salem University Lokoja, who served as one of the supervisor of the Thesis said, “The student has taken the pain, went through the rigorous processes to research on this new area of modern warfare.

“The study has opened our eyes to see the gap and the need to move and establish the legal framework. That’s the asses of this academic research work”

The Internal Examiner, Prof. Daniel F Atidoga and the External Examiner Prof. Enemaku Obaje has thumped up the outcome of the research work by saying, “The traditional warfare system known across the world is the use of military personnel, heavy military equipment like guns, bomb, missiles, tank etc, and all the legal framework are there. But the drone technology is relatively new in warfare this study has found out there is not law for the use of drone technology, that gap must be closed and that why we are calling on the stakeholders in warfare to come up with the legal framework for the new warfare system that is trending globally.

They argued that the use of drone technology can lead to abuse of human rights if not we’ll managed with necessary laws.

The Thesis is titled, “Human Rights Protection in Armed Conflicts: An Assessment of Contemporary Legal Issues in Modern warfare”

Highlight of the event is formal confirment of Ph.D Public Law on the student Mr Sunday Jossy Adejemiluwa of the Salem University Lokoja.
