UniAbuja Hosts US Research Teams from Washington and New York Universities to Tackle Cardiovascular Health
The University of Abuja (UniAbuja) received high-level research delegations from the Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis and New York University (NYU) on Wednesday, February 25, 2026, to strengthen international partnerships in medical research
The delegations were led by Professor Mark Huffman of Washington University School of Medicine and Professor Gbenga Ogedegbe of New York University, both research partners of the University.
The visit was facilitated by Dike Ojji, Professor of Medicine and Preventive Cardiology and Director of the Institute for Advanced Medical Research and Training at the University of Abuja.
Welcoming the teams, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Hakeem Babatunde Fawehinmi, noted that sustained international collaboration is essential to translating research into measurable improvements in public health.
"I'm happy that you are adopting a primary health care approach to your research. We are looking at a primary health care system going to the root cause of the problem, trying to work with under-privileged groups, trying to work with communities, " Fawehinmi said, adding that the University management would explore how studies overseas can be replicated in Nigeria to reduce the burden of heart diseases across the African continent.
