UNN VC Calls on US-Based Alumni to Mobilise Support for University’s Development

The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Nigeria (UNN), Prof. Simon Uchenna Ortuanya, has urged alumni of the University in the United States to unite, mobilise their colleagues and channel their collective expertise, networks and resources towards the sustainable development of their alma mater.

Prof. Ortuanya made the call in Chicago, United States, where he attended the 20th National Convention of the University of Nigeria Alumni and Friends Association USA, held from August 14 to 16, 2026.

The convention brought together UNN alumni and friends for meaningful engagement, networking and discussions on ways to strengthen their relationship with the University.

Activities at the convention included a keynote address by Dr Chidebelu Ufordike, Chief Operating Officer of New Jersey Urology, U.S. Urology Partners; fireside chats; business and networking sessions; and the launch of scholarships for UNN students.

Addressing the gathering, Prof. Ortuanya said the University needed the collective commitment of its alumni to sustain its current development trajectory and achieve its vision of becoming the best university in Africa.

He challenged alumni to reflect on what they could individually and collectively contribute to the development of the University of Nigeria.

The Vice-Chancellor urged alumni to move beyond celebrating their individual achievements and embrace a sustained commitment to giving back to the institution that provided the foundation for their careers.

Prof. Ortuanya also called for a stronger and more inclusive alumni movement, noting that the large community of UNN graduates in the United States provides a unique opportunity to harness expertise, networks and resources for the advancement of the University.

He stressed that alumni contributions should go beyond one-off interventions, with greater emphasis placed on initiatives capable of creating lasting value and sustainable impact.

The Vice-Chancellor’s participation in the convention underscores his commitment to uniting and deepening engagement with UNN alumni worldwide, while encouraging them to play a more active role in the development and repositioning of the University.

Prof. Ortuanya attended the convention with Prof. Ike Onyishi, a member of the University of Nigeria Governing Council and Director of the University of Nigeria Press Limited.
