UNN VC Engages Global Forum on Sustainable Development, Rule of Law

The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), Professor Simon Uchenna Ortuanya, has used his participation in an international seminar on the implementation of the United Nations 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda to advance the University’s focus on global visibility and strategic partnerships.

Professor Ortuanya recently participated in a seminar on the Implementation of the United Nations 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda under the Rule of Law as part of his official visit to the People’s Republic of China.

The visit also provided the Vice-Chancellor with opportunities to explore stronger institutional partnerships in education, research, technology and innovation.

His participation in the seminar enabled the University of Nigeria to engage directly with international stakeholders on issues related to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals and the role of universities in addressing global development challenges.

The forum was particularly relevant to UNN’s institutional collaboration agenda, as universities play an important role in generating knowledge, developing innovative solutions, building human capacity and promoting institutions capable of supporting sustainable development.

During the seminar, Professor Ortuanya held discussions with the Counsellor of the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in Papua New Guinea, Mr. Liu Linlin, on opportunities for stronger institutional linkages and mutually beneficial cooperation.

The discussions centred on the role of universities in international cooperation, knowledge exchange, innovation and sustainable development, while opening further avenues for engagement between the University of Nigeria and institutions within the wider Chinese academic and development ecosystem.

Professor Ortuanya’s participation in the global forum forms part of his administration’s efforts to position UNN within the global knowledge economy.

Through international platforms such as the seminar, the University is seeking to expand its networks, expose its academic community to global best practices and create opportunities for collaborative research and innovation.

The engagement is also expected to contribute to the University’s broader internationalisation programme, which places emphasis on building strategic alliances that can deliver practical benefits to staff, students and researchers.

The Vice-Chancellor’s engagement with the Sustainable Development Agenda aligns with the University’s wider responsibility to use its academic and research capabilities to contribute to solutions to Nigeria’s and Africa’s development challenges.

Under Professor Ortuanya’s leadership, international engagement is increasingly being positioned as a pathway for expanding opportunities, strengthening institutional capacity and enhancing the University of Nigeria’s contribution to sustainable development at national, continental and global levels.
