ABSU Vice-Chancellor Inaugurates SUGECO Members for 2026/2027 Student Union Elections

The Vice-Chancellor of Abia State University, ABSU, Professor Ndukwe J. Okeudo, has inaugurated the reconstituted Student Union Government Electoral Committee, SUGECO, to oversee the conduct of the 2026/2027 Student Union Government elections scheduled for August 2026.
The Vice-Chancellor, who was represented at the inauguration by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Academic, Professor Gazie Okpara, said the reconstitution of the committee signifies the official commencement of preparations for the forthcoming student union elections.
In his remarks, Professor Okpara recalled the controversies that surrounded the previous student union election, which ultimately led to its postponement. He explained that the inauguration of the new SUGECO marks the formal lifting of the ban on student political activities and the beginning of the electoral process.
He reassured members of the committee that the University Management, under the leadership of Professor Okeudo, has put all necessary logistics and institutional support in place to ensure that the elections are credible, transparent, free, fair, and widely accepted by the university community.
On behalf of the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Okpara formally inaugurated the members of the committee and charged them to discharge their responsibilities with integrity, impartiality, and a strong sense of accountability.
Speaking on behalf of the committee, the Dean of Student Affairs and Chairman of SUGECO, Professor Dick Uduma, expressed appreciation to the Vice-Chancellor for the confidence reposed in the committee. He thanked the University Management for its guidance and support, assuring that the committee would not betray the trust placed in it and would conduct a transparent, peaceful, and credible election in line with the University's values of excellence, integrity, and service to humanity.
The reconstituted SUGECO comprises representatives drawn from various departments and units of the University, including both teaching and non-teaching staff, reflecting the University's commitment to inclusiveness and balanced representation in the electoral process.
