ACU Celebrates Council Member, Dr. Adedamola Dada, After West Africa’s First Telerobotic Surgery

Ajayi Crowther University (ACU), Oyo, has congratulated a member of its Governing Council, Dr. Adedamola Dada, following the successful performance of West Africa’s first telerobotic surgery.
Dr. Dada is the Chief Executive Officer of Redeemer’s Health Village, Mowe, Ogun State, where a team of medical specialists carried out the pioneering procedure on a patient located approximately 500 kilometres away in Abuja.
The procedure was a right radical nephrectomy, involving the removal of a kidney affected by a tumour. It was performed at Redeemer’s Health Village in collaboration with a healthcare facility in Abuja.
During the procedure, surgeons at the Ogun State facility remotely controlled the surgical robotic system connected to equipment at the Abuja hospital through an internet connection.
Reacting to the development, the Vice-Chancellor of Ajayi Crowther University, Prof. Ebunoluwa Oduwole, congratulated Dr. Dada on behalf of the University’s management team.
Prof. Oduwole said the University was proud of Dr. Dada and pleased to be associated with his achievement.
She wished him further success in his medical practice, noting that the feat could contribute to shaping the future of medical practice in Nigeria.
Responding to the successful procedure, Dr. Dada described the surgery as a significant development in Nigeria’s adoption of advanced medical technology.
He explained that telerobotic technology could enable specialists located outside Nigeria to perform complex surgical procedures on patients in the country without being physically present in the operating theatre.
The development represents a significant step in Nigeria’s application of robotic technology to complex surgical procedures and could expand access to specialised medical care across different parts of the country.
