Founded in 1981, Akanu Ibiam Federal Polytechnic in Unwana was established to address technological education needs. It moved to its permanent site thanks to a land donation by Late Ezeogo Dr. Akanu Ibiam.

 Established in 1981 by the Federal Government, Akanu Ibiam Federal Polytechnic, Unwana, was founded to address the growing need for technological education in Nigeria. Originally based at the former Federal Government College Okposi, the institution relocated to its current permanent site in Unwana, thanks to a generous donation of approximately 620 hectares of land from the traditional ruler, Late Ezeogo Dr. Akanu Ibiam.

Notable Milestones:

- Foundation: The cornerstone was laid by Dr. Alex Ekwueme, then Civilian Vice-President of Nigeria, on April 30, 1982.

- First Admission: On March 13, 1982, the Polytechnic admitted 178 students for various courses.

- Initial Departments: The first programs included Business Administration, Secretarial Studies, Electrical/Electronics Engineering Technology, and Mechanical Engineering Technology.

- First Convocation: The first convocation in March 1984 celebrated the graduation of students from the 1981/82 and 1982/83 sessions.

- Student Enrollment: By the 2015/2016 session, the Polytechnic had approximately 6,000 students.

Mission and Structure:

The Polytechnic operates under the mission of “Skill for Technological Freedom,” emphasizing its commitment to equipping students with practical and technological skills. It is structured into six schools offering diverse programs and supported by administrative sectors including Audit, Public Relations, Bursary, and Information and Communication Technology (ICT).

Akanu Ibiam Federal Polytechnic continues to play a pivotal role in providing high-quality technological education and contributing to Nigeria’s technological advancement.
