Effective Assessment Key to Better Learning, Says FULafia Don

An expert in the Department of Economics, Federal University of Lafia (FULafia), Dr. Walter Ugwuoke, has stressed the importance of effective assessment in improving teaching and learning outcomes.

Ugwuoke made the call while speaking on the topic: "Effective Assessment Design and Marking Strategies," where he described assessment as an integral part of the teaching and learning process.

He said assessment provides evidence of whether intended learning outcomes have been achieved, while also helping educators identify areas requiring improvement.

The don highlighted various forms of assessment, including summative, continuous and self-assessment.

He discussed principles of effective assessment design, marking schemes and appropriate marking strategies.

Ugwuoke urged educators to address common challenges associated with assessment and provide constructive feedback to learners.

He stressed that well-designed assessments should promote learning, encourage active participation and provide useful information that would help improve students' academic performance.

He added that effective assessment remains essential to achieving meaningful educational outcomes.
