The Bauchi State Government has appealed to parents, government agencies, and sports stakeholders to invest more in school and grassroots sports to promote discipline and protect children from social vices.

Bauchi State Government has urged parents and stakeholders to support school and grassroots sports, describing them as vital tools for youth development, discipline, and preventing social vices during the 2025 UBEC/SUBEB Schools Sports Competition.

The appeal was made by the Executive Chairman of the Bauchi State Universal Basic Education Board, Abubakar Isa, during the state finals of the 2025 UBEC/SUBEB Basic Education Schools Sports Competition held at the Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa Stadium, Bauchi.

Represented by his Senior Special Assistant, Abubakar Mansur, Isa described sports as an effective tool for positively engaging young people and fostering discipline among schoolchildren.

He said, “Sports have continued to serve as an effective tool for engaging young people positively. We therefore call on government, parents and other stakeholders to invest more in sports development in schools and at the grassroots to keep our children away from social vices.”

The SUBEB chairman commended officials, coaches, game masters and pupils for their commitment to the success of the competition.

Also speaking, the North-East Zonal Director of the Universal Basic Education Commission, Abdullahi Jarma, congratulated participants on their performances and urged them to remain committed to sports.

He said, “This competition serves as preparation for the national finals scheduled to hold in Delta State later this year. We urge all stakeholders to sustain their support for the development of school sports.”

Earlier, the Director of School Services at SUBEB, Zuhairu Usman, said the use of genuine school pupils from across the state’s local government areas had strengthened the credibility of the competition.

According to him, “The selection of genuine school pupils from across the local government areas has improved the credibility of this competition. Coaches and officials must maintain transparency in selecting athletes who will represent Bauchi State at the national finals.”

Punch reports that at the end of the football events, Bauchi South defeated Bauchi Central 2-1 to emerge champions in the male category, while Bogoro won the female football title.
