FULafia Dons Raise Alarm Over Climate Change, Emerging Risks

FULafia, have raised concerns over the growing impact of climate change on Nigeria’s ecosystem, health, food security, water resources, livelihoods and economic development.
The academics spoke during a one-day policy roundtable organised by the Department of Political Science, Faculty of Social Sciences, Federal University of Lafia, in collaboration with the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung, at the department’s boardroom.
Speaking on the theme: "Climate Change, Conflict and Human Security: Emerging Risks for Nigeria and the Sahel," Dr Ochoga and Prof Okoli identified climate stress, resource scarcity, demographic pressure and state fragility as major security threats in the region.
They said climate change was aggravating conflicts and worsening human insecurity, particularly in the North-West, North-East and North-Central, where communities have experienced displacement, rural poverty and loss of lives and livelihoods.
The professors also noted that only 12 per cent of farmers use solar panels, raising concerns about the implications of climate change for employment, poverty and businesses.
They called for climate-smart interventions, effective resource governance and stronger regional cooperation to address emerging risks.
