FUNAAB Biosciences College Honours Prof. Tope Popoola at Retirement Ceremony

The College of Biosciences (COLBIOS), Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB), on September 16, 2026, held a send-forth ceremony in honour of Prof. Tope Popoola, who retired from the services of the University after a distinguished career.

Speaking at the ceremony, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Babatunde Kehinde, described the celebrant as a respected and unassuming personality whose contributions to the University and Ogun State remained worthy of commendation.

Prof. Kehinde noted that despite his distinguished public service as a two-time Commissioner in Ogun State, Prof. Popoola remained humble and approachable.

He added that the celebrant had served the University in various leadership capacities, from Head of Department to Dean, as well as a member of the Governing Council.

The Vice-Chancellor commended Prof. Popoola for continuing to contribute to the development of the University towards the twilight of his career.

He specifically acknowledged the retired professor’s role in facilitating several developmental projects and initiatives, including the provision of five Yayi buses for transportation on the University campus, the ongoing University Hospital Complex, a borehole project facilitated through the Dangote Group and streetlight infrastructure along the Princess Bisi Soboyejo Hall of Residence axis.

Prof. Kehinde urged those who had taken over responsibilities previously held by the celebrant to sustain his legacy of service, excellence and commitment while working to take the University to greater heights.

Earlier in her welcome address, the Dean of COLBIOS, Prof. Iyabode Kehinde, described Prof. Popoola as a mentor, leader and elder statesman who had left an indelible mark on the College and the University.

She appreciated the celebrant for his exemplary leadership, mentorship and commitment to the development of members of the College, noting that his retirement marked the end of an impactful chapter while also opening a new phase of service and engagement.

In his vote of thanks, Prof. Popoola expressed appreciation to the University Management, colleagues, friends, family members and other stakeholders who had contributed to the success of his career and the retirement ceremony.

He reflected on his journey through academia and public service, noting that he had attained several milestones in his professional career, including becoming the first professor in his family.

Prof. Popoola also appreciated the opportunity to serve the University in various capacities and to return to teaching and research after periods of public service.

The ceremony featured tributes from colleagues, friends, members of the College and other groups, who celebrated Prof. Popoola’s contributions to academia, public service and the development of FUNAAB.
