FUNAAB Opens Community Farmers Market to Boost Food Security and Local Trade

The Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB) has commenced operations at its Community Farmers Market as part of efforts to promote agricultural development, strengthen food security, encourage entrepreneurship and deepen engagement with its host communities.

Located along the university's Third Gate, the market officially began operations on June 29, 2026. It serves as a central outlet for the sale of fresh agricultural produce and value-added products from the university farms, researchers, students and neighbouring communities.

The initiative is expected to strengthen the agricultural value chain by connecting producers directly with consumers while providing access to affordable, high-quality farm produce.

Chairperson of the FUNAAB Community Farmers Market, Tawa Ayelotan, described the commencement of operations as a major milestone for farmers, traders, members of the university community and residents of adjoining communities.

She expressed appreciation to the university management for bringing the project to fruition, noting that the market would improve access to fresh agricultural produce while creating opportunities for increased income and improved livelihoods.

According to Ayelotan, although the market will remain open daily, its major trading activities will take place every five days in line with the traditional market cycle observed in many communities.

She expressed optimism that the market would develop into a vibrant commercial hub capable of stimulating local trade, promoting agricultural development and strengthening the relationship between FUNAAB and its host communities.

Traders who participated in the opening, including Chinyere Ogunji, Motunrayo Jimoh and Akinlaja Ogunla, praised the initiative, describing it as a significant step toward improving the agricultural value chain and supporting the livelihoods of farmers and traders.

They said the market would provide consumers with easier access to fresh farm produce and other agricultural products directly from producers, reducing the need to travel to neighbouring markets.

The Baale of the host community, Chief Folorunso Ajasa, also welcomed the initiative, describing it as a timely intervention that would promote agricultural development, improve access to fresh produce and expand economic opportunities for farmers and residents.

He noted that the market would enable farmers to sell directly to consumers, eliminating unnecessary middlemen and allowing producers to earn better returns on their agricultural products.
