KHAIRUN University Library Champions Data Privacy Awareness Among Information Professionals

The University Library of Khalifa Isyaku Rabiu University, Kano (KHAIRUN) once again demonstrated its leadership in library innovation and professional development as it successfully hosted a national workshop on “Data Privacy Protection: Best Practices for Libraries and Information Centers.

The event, organized in collaboration with the Nigerian Library Association (NLA) and the Nigerian Data Protection Commission (NDPC), was held on Wednesday, 18th February, 2026, at the KHAIRUN campus. The workshop attracted distinguished information professionals, academicians, and data protection advocates from across Nigeria.

In his welcome address, the Vice Chancellor of the University Prof. ABDULRASHID Garba, emphasized that libraries have a moral and professional duty to uphold the privacy and trust of their patrons, describing the workshop as part of the University Library’s dedication to promoting ethical practices and responsible data management.

The occasion was graced by the Vice National President Dr. Lawal Gade, who attended alongside with top members of the Association. The Vice Chancellor commended the University Library for its foresight in organizing such a timely and impactful event, reaffirming the institution’s commitment to academic excellence and professional capacity building.

Other distinguished guests include Professor Lukman Ibraheem Diso of Bayero University, Kano; Alhaji Sanusi A. Nassarawa, FNLA; Associate Professor Umar Garba Gama; University, College, and Polytechnic Librarians; members of the Nigerian Library Association; as well as staff and students of Khalifa Isyaku Rabiu University.

Speakers from the NLA and NDPC led insightful sessions on the core principles of data protection—transparency, consent, accountability, and security—while also highlighting practical approaches to complying with the Nigeria Data Protection Act (NDPA) 2023. Participants engaged in interactive discussions on developing institutional privacy policies, conducting data audits, and enhancing user awareness.

In his closing remarks, the University Librarian, Malam Nazir Muhammad, extended deep appreciation to the Vice Chancellor, invited guests, and participants for their active contributions, noting that the event reinforced KHAIRUN’s position as a hub of knowledge, collaboration, and ethical innovation in the information sector.

The workshop concluded with a collective commitment to strengthening adherence to data privacy standards and supporting libraries nationwide in delivering secure and responsible information services.
