Lagos State University Lecturers Begin Indefinite Strike Over 40% Pay Increase

Lecturers in three Lagos State-owned universities have embarked on an indefinite strike over the alleged failure of the Lagos State Government to implement the 40 per cent salary increase approved under the 2025 Federal Government/ASUU agreement.

The affected institutions are Lagos State University, LASU; Lagos State University of Education, LASUED; and Lagos State University of Science and Technology, LASUSTECH.

The industrial action was declared in a joint statement dated 15th September 2026, signed by the Acting Chairman of ASUU, LASU branch, Olusegun Babalola; his counterpart in LASUED, Grace Abimbola; and ASUU-LASUSTECH Chairman, Murisiku Onigemo. The letter was addressed to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu.

The unions said they had earlier issued a 14-day ultimatum to the state government on 31st August 2026, demanding the domestication and implementation of the December 2025 agreement, which provided for a 40 per cent upward review of academic staff emoluments effective 1st January 2026.

According to the unions, the ultimatum expired on 13th September 2026 without any satisfactory resolution or dialogue from the state government, despite a final warning issued on 10th September.

The principal demand is the full domestication and implementation of the agreement across all Lagos State-owned universities, including payment of the Consolidated Academic Tools Allowance, CATA, and welfare provisions for serving and retired academic staff.

The unions described the action as total, comprehensive and indefinite, adding that it has the backing of the ASUU national leadership. They said the strike will remain in force until meaningful engagement produces a satisfactory resolution.

ASUU urged students and parents to remain calm and law-abiding, while calling on traditional rulers, religious leaders, alumni associations and civil society organisations to support its demand for implementation.

The Lagos State Government is yet to issue an official response to the industrial action as of press time.
