LASU Retains No. 1 Position in West Africa, Climbs to 493rd Globally in UI GreenMetric 2026 Ranking

Lagos State University (LASU) has retained its position as the Overall Best University in West Africa in the 2026 UI GreenMetric Sustainable University Rankings.

The latest ranking was announced at the UI GreenMetric Sustainable University Rankings 2026 Results and Awards Ceremony held in Baku, Azerbaijan.

LASU placed 493rd globally among 2,016 universities and higher education institutions from 110 countries, representing a significant improvement from its 760th position in the 2025 ranking.

The achievement extends LASU’s consistent dominance in the West African sustainability rankings. Since joining the UI GreenMetric ranking in 2022, the university has maintained the No. 1 position in West Africa for five consecutive ranking cycles: 2022, 2023, 2024, 2025 and 2026.

The 2026 result also marks a substantial improvement in LASU’s global sustainability ranking.

The university moved from 799th globally in 2024 to 760th in 2025 and has now climbed to 493rd in 2026. This represents an advancement of 267 places within one year and 306 places from its 2024 position.

The 2026 UI GreenMetric ranking evaluates universities based on their sustainability performance across several key areas, including:

• Setting and Infrastructure
• Energy and Climate Change
• Waste
• Water
• Transportation
• Education
• Governance and Digitalisation

LASU’s performance in the latest ranking reflects the university’s continued institutional commitment to sustainability, environmental responsibility and the adoption of innovative practices across its operations.

In August 2026, LASU also received international recognition for its contribution to the UI GreenMetric network. The university’s National and Regional Coordinatorship was renewed, while it was also elevated to the position of Co-Chairmanship for key sessions at UI GreenMetric international events for the 2026/2027 academic session.

The latest ranking reflects the collective efforts of the university management, staff, students, units and committees involved in advancing LASU’s sustainability agenda.

The achievement further highlights the university’s growing profile in areas beyond academic excellence, including sustainable development, innovation, responsible governance and institutional transformation.

The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Ayodeji Olawunmi Badejo, FCASSON, FAPROCON, MNAE, congratulated the entire LASU community on the achievement and commended members of the university community whose commitment and contributions continue to advance its sustainability agenda.

As LASU builds on the achievements of previous administrations, the latest UI GreenMetric result represents another milestone in the university’s progress and its ambition to maintain a leading position within Africa and the global higher education landscape.
