Meet Prof. Iya Abubakar, the first Northern Nigerian to earn PhD in mathematics

African Mathematics Genius from Adamawa State. A First Class graduate of Mathematics at the University of Ibadan in 1957, is also the first Northern-Nigerian to earn a Ph.D. in any field when he earned it at the University of Cambridge at the age of 28.

At 33, he became the only Nigerian appointed as a Professor in the Department of Mathematics at the Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria.

At 37, Abubakar became the Head of Department, Mathematics/Computer Science of the University.

At age 40, the Adamawa-born egghead became the second indigenous Vice Chancellor of ABU, Zaria until he retired from academics at the age of 44 in 1978. #HistoryVille
