Mekelle University Holds Validation Workshop on Gender Machineries

Mekelle University's Institute of Gender Studies held a validation workshop on Wednesday, September 24, 2026, at the Agricultural Hall to review findings of a contextual capacity and needs assessment of gender machineries in the Tigray Region.

The workshop was jointly organised by the Institute of Gender Studies and the Tigray Regional Bureau of Women Affairs. It brought together stakeholders to examine existing capacity, institutional arrangements and needs surrounding gender studies and gender machineries across the region.

In his opening remarks, Mr Ataklity Adugna, Adviser to the President of Mekelle University, highlighted the importance of strengthening gender-related institutions and academic programmes to address systemic gender issues and drive inclusive development.

Delivering the keynote address, Mrs Shewit Adissu, Head of the Tigray Regional Bureau of Women Affairs, emphasised collaboration between academic institutions, government bodies and partners to bolster gender-responsive policies and institutional capacity.

Mrs Mebrat Yohanes, Director of Women, Youth and Child Affairs at Mekelle University, gave closing remarks, underscoring the value of the validation process in identifying priority gaps and mapping actionable steps.

During interactive sessions, participants evaluated assessment results and contributed recommendations focused on enhancing gender studies, closing operational gaps and boosting institutional support.

Insights and strategies from the workshop are expected to serve as a roadmap for future interventions and gender-responsive programming across Tigray.
