NANS Visits LASUED Management, Requests Establishment Of Students’ Union

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has paid a courtesy visit to the management of Lagos State University of Education (LASUED), where it presented requests, including the establishment of a Students’ Union in the university.

The visit, which took place on Tuesday, July 21, 2026, was aimed at discussing issues affecting students and strengthening collaboration between the students’ body and the institution’s management.

The NANS delegation was received by the Vice-Chancellor of LASUED, Professor Bidemi Bilkis Lafiaji-Okuneye, at the Vice-Chancellor’s Office.

Welcoming the delegation, Professor Lafiaji-Okuneye highlighted the growth of the university, noting that LASUED has successfully produced its first set of graduating students and is preparing for its maiden convocation ceremony.

She reaffirmed the institution’s commitment to students’ welfare, stressing that the management remains dedicated to addressing genuine concerns and supporting students’ academic and personal development.

Speaking on behalf of the delegation, NANS General Secretary, Comrade Uthman Oladimeji, commended LASUED management for maintaining a disciplined, secure and conducive learning environment.

He also praised the university’s zero-tolerance policy on sexual harassment and appreciated the Vice-Chancellor and her team for providing employment opportunities to some alumni of the university’s legacy college who are members of the Student National Association.

During the interactive session, the NANS delegation presented several requests, including the establishment of a Students’ Union, provision of office space for the proposed union secretariat and increased employment opportunities for students where possible.

The Chief of Staff of NANS, Comrade Adegboyega Adeboye, also advised students to avoid social vices such as drug abuse, cultism and other forms of misconduct.

He explained that NANS’ collaborations with agencies including the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) and Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) are aimed at promoting safer campuses and responsible student behaviour.

Responding, Professor Lafiaji-Okuneye commended the delegation for its maturity, decorum and constructive approach during the engagement, noting that their conduct represented a positive image of Nigerian students.

She assured NANS that the requests presented would be carefully considered by the university management and that the association would be informed of the outcome after necessary consultations.

The Vice-Chancellor further encouraged students to communicate their concerns through appropriate channels rather than spreading misleading or inappropriate information on social media.

The visit also featured the decoration of Professor Lafiaji-Okuneye as an ambassador against social vices by NANS in recognition of her commitment to maintaining a disciplined and responsible university environment.
