Nnamdi Azikiwe University Appoints New Vice Chancellor

The Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK), Awka, on Sunday officially announced the appointment of a substantive Vice Chancellor, one year after the reversal of Prof. Bernard Odoh’s appointment by the President and Visitor to all federal universities, Bola Tinubu.

The announcement marks a significant development in the university’s leadership after a prolonged period of uncertainty.

Prof. Odoh’s initial appointment was rescinded amid controversies surrounding the recruitment process and questions regarding his academic credentials. The reversal followed intense scrutiny from both internal and external stakeholders of the university, highlighting concerns about procedural integrity and governance in appointments.

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) and the university’s chapter of the Medical and Dental Consultants Association of Nigeria (MDCAN) had previously raised objections to Prof. Odoh’s appointment. They described the process as irregular and prejudicial and emphasized that the matter was under judicial review, reflecting broader tensions over transparency and accountability in the university’s leadership selection.

At a press briefing held in Abuja, the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council, Olugbenga Kukoyi, announced the appointment of Prof. Bond Anyaechie as the new Vice Chancellor. Kukoyi described the selection process as “thorough and transparent,” emphasizing that the university had taken steps to ensure fairness, credibility, and compliance with established regulations.

“I am pleased to announce Professor Bond Anyaechie as the substantive Vice Chancellor of Nnamdi Azikiwe University after a thorough and transparent process,” Kukoyi stated, highlighting the administration’s commitment to restoring confidence and stability within the university community.

The appointment of Prof. Anyaechie is expected to usher in a new era of leadership for UNIZIK, focusing on academic excellence, institutional reforms, and strengthened governance structures. University stakeholders, including staff, students, and alumni, have welcomed the decision, anticipating that it will resolve previous uncertainties and reinforce the institution’s national and international standing.
