OAU Mourns Sudden Passing of 18-Year-Old Medical Student

The management of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, has officially confirmed the sudden death of Timilehin Adetoye Toromade, an 18-year-old Part Three student in the Department of Medicine and Surgery. 

According to a statement released by the university's Public Relations Officer, Abiodun Olarewaju, Toromade was discovered lifeless in his hostel room at Fajuyi Hall (Annex C, Room 109) in the early hours of Tuesday, January 6, 2026. Preliminary reports suggest he passed away in his sleep sometime after 2:00 a.m., as he had reportedly opened the door for a roommate around that time.

 Vice-Chancellor Professor Adebayo Simeon Bamire expressed "profound shock and deep sorrow" at the loss of a student whose life was filled with "promise, purpose, and potential".

The university management has assured the public that it is working with relevant authorities to conduct a full investigation into the circumstances of the death, in accordance with established medical and legal procedures. Counselors and support measures have been mobilized to assist students and staff emotionally impacted by the tragedy.
