The Wings Secondary School, Iwo, has emerged winner of the Osun State edition of the 11th NILDS Secondary Schools Quiz Competition after scoring 60 points.

Wings Secondary School, Iwo, has emerged winner of the Osun State edition of the 11th National Institute for Legislative and Democratic Studies (NILDS) Secondary Schools Quiz Competition.

The school scored 60 points to finish ahead of four other participating schools at the competition held at Ara Hall, SUBEB Warehouse, behind Omoluabi Building, Abere, Osun State.

With the victory, The Wings Secondary School will represent Osun State at the Southwest Zonal edition of the competition later this year.

The competition, organised by NILDS, was held under the theme “Legislature and Democracy”, with students tested on their knowledge of Nigeria's legislature, democratic principles and legislative structure.

Five schools eventually participated in the competition after six schools were initially selected. The participating schools were The Wings Secondary School, Iwo; Alfareed College, Ede; Zion Baptist High School, Osogbo; Vickayor Private School, Ife; and Ogedengbe School of Science, Ilesa. Kiriji Memorial College, representing Ikirun Zone, did not participate.

The quiz was conducted in three rounds, with each correct answer attracting five points. The Wings Secondary School started strongly with 20 points in the first round, alongside Alfareed College, Vickayor Private School and Ogedengbe School of Science. Zion Baptist High School scored 15 points.

The Iwo-based school then delivered a perfect 25 points in the second round, taking its cumulative score to 45 and establishing a significant lead.

The school added another 15 points in the final round to finish with 60 points and secure first position.

The students who represented The Wings Schools were Nurudeen Roheemah and Samuel Oladotun.

The victory gives the students an opportunity to compete against representatives from other states in the Southwest at the next stage of the NILDS competition.

The competition also provided students with an opportunity to deepen their understanding of Nigeria's democratic institutions, including the functions of the legislature, lawmaking, representation, oversight and the separation of powers.

Beyond academic knowledge, the quiz encouraged quick thinking, confidence, public speaking and interest in public affairs. The three-round format also required participants to maintain strong performances throughout the competition.

The Wings Schools will now begin preparations for the Southwest zonal competition, where it will face representatives from other states in the region.

The school management expressed appreciation to the organisers, founders, governing board, teaching and non-teaching staff, as well as the students who represented the institution.

The 60-point victory has secured The Wings Secondary School a place at the next stage and gives the school an opportunity to represent Osun State beyond the state level.
