PLASU SUG Successfully Negotiates Major Reductions in Transportation Fares for Students
The Students' Union Government of Plateau State University successfully negotiated reduced transportation fares, easing financial burdens for students traveling home after exams.
In a significant relief for students, the Students' Union Government (SUG) of Plateau State University, Bokkos, has successfully negotiated reduced transportation fares for students traveling home after completing their exams.
This development comes after students expressed concerns over a sharp increase in transportation costs, with fares having risen by over 50% in recent times. The SUG, led by President Comrade Donald Yaksuk Doedel, engaged in negotiations with local transportation unions and secured a reduction in the fares.
"We understood the students' plight and took immediate action," stated Comrade Doedel. "After productive discussions with the transport unions, we managed to reduce fares from ₦2,500 to ₦2,300 for trips to Jos, from ₦2,800 to ₦2,500 for trips to Mangu, and from ₦1,300 to ₦1,000 for students traveling to Barkin Ladi. Students who are short of the reduced fare can also appeal to the drivers."
The new fare structure, which went into effect immediately, has been widely appreciated by students. "We're thankful to the SUG for intervening," said several students. "This reduction has eased the financial strain on many of us."
Transportation unions attributed the previous fare hike to rising fuel prices and increased vehicle maintenance costs. However, they recognized the SUG's concerns and agreed to lower the fares following the negotiations.
The SUG’s swift and effective action has drawn praise from students for their dedication to addressing pressing issues. Students who wish to benefit from the reduced fares are encouraged to visit the designated transportation point at ACROSS when traveling.
The SUG has reaffirmed its commitment to providing quality leadership and ensuring the welfare of Plateau State University students.
