Rea Hands Over Solar-Powered Streetlights To University Of Maiduguri

The Rural Electrification Agency, REA, has officially handed over the completed solar-powered streetlight component of the ongoing 12-megawatt, MW, hybrid solar power project to the University of Maiduguri, UNIMAID.

The project is implemented under the REA's Energising Education Programme, EEP, a flagship Federal Government initiative designed to provide reliable, sustainable, and clean electricity to Federal Universities and University Teaching Hospitals across Nigeria.

The 12MW hybrid solar power facility is designed to serve both the University of Maiduguri and the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital, UMTH. In addition to improving the institutional electricity supply, the project includes the installation of 159 solar-powered streetlights to boost campus security, and the provision of renewable energy training opportunities for students.

The formal handover ceremony took place on Monday, 27th July, 2026, at the Office of the Vice-Chancellor, Muhammadu Buhari Senate Building, University of Maiduguri.

Receiving the handover documents on behalf of the institution, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Mohammed Laminu Mele, expressed appreciation to the Federal Government and the REA for the intervention. He noted that the newly installed solar-powered streetlights have already begun to enhance nighttime security across the campus. Professor Mele also assured the Agency of the University Management's commitment to the proper maintenance and long-term sustainability of the infrastructure.

Earlier in his remarks, the REA Team Lead, Engineer Joro Salau, formally handed over the 159 streetlights and commended the University Management for its cooperation and support throughout the implementation phase. He also appreciated the Engineering, Procurement, and Construction, EPC, partners for their dedication to the successful and timely execution of the project.
