Search Ends in Tragedy as Missing 27-Year-Old NYSC Member Is Found Dead in Bayelsa

27-year-old NYSC member, Okebaram Stanley Chimaroke, has been found dead in Bayelsa State after days of being declared missing. Police have launched an investigation into the tragic incident.
The deceased, identified as Okebaram Stanley Chimaroke, 27, was serving in Nembe Local Government Area of Bayelsa State when he reportedly went missing. Chimaroke, a Civil Engineering graduate and former Students' Union Government (SUG) president of the Federal Polytechnic, Nekede, was last seen on July 24, 2026, in the riverine community where he was carrying out his national service.
According to reports, fellow corps members raised the alarm after repeated attempts to reach him by phone proved unsuccessful. A missing person report was subsequently lodged with the police on July 25, prompting security operatives to launch a search operation in the creek community, located about 45 minutes by boat from the Nembe Divisional Headquarters.
The search later led to the recovery of Chimaroke's body from a body of water in Nembe. While initial reports alleged that he may have been attacked by unidentified assailants before his death, the exact circumstances surrounding the incident remain unclear.
Confirming the development, the Bayelsa State Police Command said it has commenced a discreet investigation into the incident. Police spokesperson Musa Mohammed stated that the body has been deposited in a morgue while detectives work to determine the cause of death and identify those responsible, if any.
The tragic incident has sparked renewed concerns over the safety of corps members posted to remote and riverine communities across Nigeria, with many calling for stronger security measures and improved welfare for serving NYSC members. Although reports now claim his body has been recovered, the bayelsa state police command has yet to officially confirm the latest development or disclose the exact circumstances surrounding his death.
